The year saw Cagayan de Oro City and the rest of Northern Mindanao continue to recover from the effects of the pandemic with more new store openings, construction projects continuing, more dining options, new project launches and project groundbreaking activities. PROJECT UPDATES

SR Mall, the first mall of Jasaan, Misamis Oriental had already taken shape.


Construction continued for Gaisano Uptown City Mall.


Continued construction for Casa Mira Towers with the 27-storey Tower 2 and the the 23-storey Tower 1.


Continued construction of TH MALL Puerto.


Construction progress of Building 4 of One Oasis Cagayan de Oro, the midrise condominium complex by Filinvest located along Lapasan-Camaman-an Road.


The first 13-storey residential tower out of 33 towers of the Valley View Township Project located in Barangay Sta. Ana, Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental is now steadily rising.


Construction of SMDC’s Vail Residences located in Upper Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City with four buildings progressing up to the 4th level.


With pile driving works are continuing for Buildings A and B, the developers of Intalio Flats Primea have now introduced Building C, which has 14 storeys and a roof deck.


Construction of Xavier University Masterson Campus dubbed Campus of the Future has already began. 


Dream Residences – Yega Development Corporation (YDC) inaugurated Phase 1 development of Dream Residences, the one hectare resort-style horizontal condominium development located right across Del Monte Golf Course in Barangay San Miguel, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon.

Gaisano executives, alongside Valencia City Mayor Azucena Huervas, led the formal ribbon-cutting ceremony for the soft opening of Gaisano City Valencia in October 2023.


Motech Cagayan de Oro, the quick auto service chain opened at Pueblo de Oro last June 7, 2023. 


Sapang Dalaga Floating Playground, the newest tourist attraction and the first of its kind in the province of Misamis Occidental opened in March. Located in Casul Bay off Barangay Caluya in Sapang Dalaga town, the floating playground covers an area of 3,500 square meters of inflatable island and waterpark with 32 fun to play courses and obstacles.


Wilcon Home Essentials opened its newest branch in Uptown Cagayan de Oro located along Masterson Avenue right beside St. Peter’s Chapel.


S&R New York Style Pizza opened at the Ground Level of Centrio Ayala Mall.


The Grill House Unlimited Seafood Eat All You Can opened two branches in Cagayan de Oro.


Hap Chan, the leading authentic Chinese restaurant chain in the Philippines opened its first branch in Cagayan de Oro City at the 3rd Floor of SM CDO Downtown.

AyalaLand Logistics Holdings Corp. (ALLHC) has completed land development for the initial phase of Laguindingan Technopark, its first industrial park in Mindanao. Located in Barangays Moog and Tubajon in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental, Laguindingan Technopark is designed to accommodate light and medium, non-polluting industries. 


Wilcon Depot opened its branch in Iligan City.


San Isidro Polymedic General Hospital (SIPGH) located along the National Highway in Barangay San Luis, Gingoog City started operations.


Kenny Rogers Roasters opened at The Loft Arcade along Ubaldo Laya Avenue in Iligan City.


Dear Joe, the first letter-writing cafe in the Philippines opened its first branch in Cagayan de Oro City in Barangay Canitoan right beside Camella Cerritos.


Bean Park 다방, the Korean-themed coffee shop has finally opened its uptown branch at Regatta Square at Pueblo de Oro.


Modesto Cafe opened on July 28, it’s second branch in the city located at the 2nd Floor of Kumon Pueblo de Oro at Regatta Square. 


Café Leone, the newest instagrammable modern restaurant in Cagayan de Oro City opened along Ramon Chaves Street.


The new PHINMA-COC Iligan Campus located along Pedro Permites Road in Barangay Pala-o welcomed its pioneering students for School Year 2023-2024.


GMAC Logitech Refrigeration Corporation, a joint venture between Ayala-owned AC Logistics Holdings Corp. (AC Logistics) and Glacier Megafridge, Inc. (GMI), formally inaugurated its cold chain facility in Tablon, Cagayan de Oro City on June 19, 2023.


GOVERNMENT PROJECTS

Rep. Rufus Rodriguez proposes Elevated Covered Walkway to connect the city’s major malls along CM Recto. 


The proposed Cagayan de Oro Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System is now in pre-project preparation stage. This was finally confirmed after the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) released the list of 194 Infrastructure Flagship Projects (IFP) under the administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.


Asenso Misamis Occidental Global Gardens and Eco-Tourism Park – scenic mountain attraction located at the foot of Mt Malindang Natural Park in Barangay Hoyohoy, Tangub City opened.


The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) held the groundbreaking ceremony for the new USTP Villanueva Campus located in Sitio Kirahon, Barangay San Martin, Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.


The new Kagay-an Extension Bridge was opened to traffic. The new 4-lane extension bridge is part of the JICA-funded Flood Risk Management Project for Cagayan de Oro River (FRIMP-CDOR).


DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan led the formal inauguration of the 2.3-kilometer new CDO River Boulevard together with Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando “Klarex” Uy, Congressmen Rufus Rodriguez and Lordan Suan, JICA representatives, other government officials and guests. 


The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has finally bid out the Laguindingan Airport Development Project – (Extension of Pre-Departure Area).


Panguil Bay Bridge – The installation of the 2nd stay cable on one pylon of the Panguil Bay Bridge Project was initiated on December 13, 2023.


Continued construction of the 4.25-kilometer, 2-lane new CDO Eastern Diversion Road.


Resumption of construction of New Cagayan de Oro City Library.


Construction of piers and supports of the Viaduct Section of the Bonbon-Macabalan Bridge Project was observed.


Construction continued for the New Balubal-Indahag Mountain Diversion Road.


The 4-lane 9.3-kilometer Puerto-Gusa Section of the Cagayan de Oro Coastal Road broke ground in March 2023.


Construction continued for the Bukidnon Airport Development Project.


A new P50 million worth Sports and Cultural Center will soon rise in Sitio Malaiba, Natumolan, Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental. 


Construction continues for the new 3-storey St. Paul Hospital at Sitio Malaiba in Upper Natumulan, Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental. 


Bugna Bridge, the final segment of the 17-kilometer Alae-Phividec Bypass Road, was finally opened just today, December 15, 2023 but only for bicycles, motorcycles, and other small 2-wheeled vehicles as two pick-up trucks were observed to be blocking the road in Brgy Mantibugao, Manolo Fortich pending right-of-way (ROW) payments.


The 3-storey LandBank Corporate Center situated along Masterson Avenue right next to Uptown Condotel is almost done.


The Upper Carmen-Patag-Kauswagan Road Project continues with the first steel tunnel under bridge in Cagayan de Oro City.


The 73-kilometer Misamis Oriental West Diversion Road (MOWDIR) is now 60 percent opened and 30 percent concreted.


Construction continues for the Multi-Level Parking Building with Open Theater and Viewing Deck Section which will be connected to the new Amphitheater as part of the Project Lunhaw development. 


The Mount Inayawan Range Natural Park (MIRNP) in Nunungan, Lanao del Norte was formally launched as the 53rd ASEAN Heritage Park (AHP) on June 28, 2023 during the 64th Araw ng Lanao del Norte – Environment Day celebration.


The new Operation Kahusay ug Kalinaw (OKK) Center or the Resilience Center located at Magsaysay Park in Divisoria, Cagayan de Oro City was formally inaugurated on August 25, 2023.


Construction continues for the 6.74-kilometer Opol-Canitoan Diversion Road. This new 4-lane diversion road will have bike lanes on both sides where motorists can bypass Bulua between Uptown CDO and Opol. 


Construction continues for the Bukidnon Sports & Cultural Complex located in Laguitas, Malaybalay City. 


Tennis enthusiasts will soon have a new spot to test their forehand and backhand with the proposed City Tennis Center located at the open space of Apovel Subdivision in Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City.


The proposed Cagayan de Oro Aerial Mass Transport System is envisioned to be the first aerial cable gondola system for urban mass transit in the Philippines. This innovative system will be capable of accommodating up to 20,000 daily commuters on its initial 3-kilometer route in Phase 1, connecting Paseo to Masterson. 


The Cagayan de Oro Convention Center will soon have a Multi-Level Carpark Building. This after the DPWH recently conducted a pre-bid conference for consultancy services for soil testing and geotechnical investigation on various infrastructure projects including the carpark building of the facility which just successfully hosted official games of the Philippine Volleyball League.


The proposed Kauswagan Interchange at the junction of the National Highway and RN Pelaez Boulevard is now in the drawing board.

Italpinas Development Corporation (IDC) formally held the groundbreaking ceremony on July 1, 2023, for Phase 3 development of its Primavera City project located along PN Roa Sr Avenue (Macapagal Drive) in Uptown Cagayan de Oro. 


Italpinas Development Corporation (IDC) through its subsidiary IDC Prime, Inc., announced its latest project – Firenze Green Tower – a 15-storey high-rise mixed-use development in Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City.

The Midtown by Vista Estates located in Canitoan, Cagayan de Oro City was officially launched. The 22-hectare mixed-use development will have a mall, hotel, exhibition and entertainment center, office buildings and residential towers (Midtown Towers) which will be the first to be constructed. 


Wee Comm Magnum Properties and Magnahomes, Inc. will be building a 15-storey condominium along a beachfront property near Wilcon Depot and Seaside Bible Camp in Barangay Barra, Opol, Misamis Oriental,


First Touch Arcade, a two-level commercial arcade is now rising at the corner of Beacon Avenue and Las Ramblas at Pueblo de Oro Business Park in Uptown Cagayan de Oro.


Nirvana Village, an upcoming multi-tower high-end residential condominium project by RGJ Realty Corporation, situated in Sta. Ana, Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, has officially unveiled its Fantasyland-inspired entrance gate. Five (5) students from Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines brought home medals in the World International Mathematical Olympiad (WIMO) 2022 Battle of the Gold Medalists, held January 6-9, 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand. They are Rey Stephen Chua of Xavier University Senior High School (Gold – Senior Secondary), Denn Ethan Josh Castro of St. Mary’s School (Silver – Primary 5), Johnny Cape Nale of City Central School (Silver – Kindergarten), Ethan Bryan See of Oro Christian Grace School (Bronze – Primary 5) and Marie Nicole Andrea Vinas of XUSHS (Bronze – Senior Secondary).


Ten (10) student gold awardees lead more than 170 students from various schools in Northern Mindanao who received awards in the Philippine International Mathematical Olympiad (PHIMO) Heat Round 2023 with results released last April 28.


Mohammad Nur G. Casib of Philippine Science High School – Central Mindanao Campus in Balo-i, Lanao del Norte finished 1st runner-up in the recently concluded National Finals of the 25th Philippine Mathematical Olympiad held March 18-19, 2023 at UP Diliman, Quezon City.

Cagayan de Oro City students once again represented the country and bagged special awards in the Guangdong-Hongkong-Macau Greater Bay Area International Mathematical Olympiad (Big Bay Bei) 2023 Final Round held last March 25, 2023.


Manolito Garces of New Eden, Pangantucan, Bukidnon bagged the Best Arabica Coffee in the 2023 Philippine Coffee Quality Competition. The awarding was one of the highlights of the just concluded Philippine Coffee Expo held at the World Trade Center in Pasay City. 


Xavier University ruled the 47th Mindanao Parliamentary Debate Championship held September 22-24, 2023.


Xavier University’s Law Debate Team composed of Mr. Klahrinz W.B. Catubig, Mr. Maiko Jay Llido, and Ms. Harriet Golda Reserva has emerged champion in the 1st Justice Hilarion L. Aquino National Memorial Debate Competition held today, March 2, 2023, at the San Beda Heritage Center in Manila.


Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan’s Xavier Debate Circle received a Grand Finals Award in the World Novice Debating Championship (WNDC) 2023 (Open Category) held online last March 25-26, 2023.


PLT Christian Orville Sabellina Abug, an alumnus of Dr. Gerardo Sabal Memorial High School (DGSMNHS) in Claveria, Misamis Oriental Batch 2016 made history as the school’s first ever graduate of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) last March 21, 2023.


Eleven (11) students from Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines brought home 1 gold medal, 4 silver medals, 5 bronze medals and a merit award in the recently concluded Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad (TIMO) 2023 Final Round held April 1-3, 2023 in Pattaya, Thailand.


Alubijid National Comprehensive High School (ANCHS) in Alubijid, Misamis Oriental has received a Top Performing School Award in the Philippine International Mathematical Olympiad (PHIMO) Heat Round 2023.


BOARD EXAM TOPNOTCHERS

VEN WINDEL GULFAN JACOT of Liceo de Cagayan University topped the December 2022 X-Ray Technologist Licensure Examination. Jacot who is from Quezon, Bukidnon was also the university’s lone examinee who took the X-Ray Technologist board exam.


Neil Bartolome P. Maglinte of Central Mindanao University (CMU) placed 8th while Karl Andree B. Olaivar of Xavier University placed 10th in the February 2023 Mechanical Engineer Board Exam. Meanwhile, the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines emerged as the Top Performing School with a 100 percent passing rate.


ZEDRIK OMEGA ORTIZ from Xavier University (XU) placed 7th in the March 2023 Physicians Licensure Examination.


Meet the five new licensed physicians from Liceo de Cagayan University who passed the March 2023 Physicians Licensure Examination where Liceo U got a 100 percent passing rate. 


Liceo de Cagayan University produced sixty-five (65) new Medical Technologists in the March 2023 Licensure Examination based on results released by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). Liceo U was also Top 5 Performing School with a 97.01 percent passing rate for schools with 50 or more examinees.


Sitty Ken Rose Alip of Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) has topped the March 2023 Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (Elementary Level). Meanwhile, nine (9) other graduates of schools from Northern Mindanao were among topnotchers in the said board exam.


GARRET WILKENSON CHING SIA from Cagayan de Oro City and a graduate of De La Salle University in Manila finished TOP 1 in the April 2023 Civil Engineers Licensure Examination. 


Phinma-Cagayan de Oro College (Phinma-COC) emerged as the Top Performing School nationwide in the April 2023 Criminologists Licensure Examination with 50 or more examinees with an 87.06 percent passing rate (74/85). Meanwhile, two graduates of Phinma-COC were among topnotchers.


HONEYLOU OPONDA REBOLOS of Capitol University in Cagayan de Oro City placed 3rd among 1,210 out of 2,558 who passed the April 2023 Licensure Examination for Midwives. 


SHAINA ROSE ALFECHE LOZANO of Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) placed 4th in the May 2023 Licensure Examination for Certified Public Accountants (CPA).


Mae Angela D. Galopo of Xavier University placed 10th in the August 2023 Food Technologists Licensure Examination. 


Jhon Paul Conde Magdayo and Reymond Ebalobo Pabelic, both from Phinma-Cagayan de Oro College, placed 6th and 7th, respectively in the August 2023 Criminologists Licensure Examination. Meanwhile, Phinma-COC also emerged as the Top 3 Performing School nationwide in the said board exam with 50 or more examinees with an 80.00 percent passing rate (136/170).


Central Mindanao University (CMU) in Maramag, Bukidnon ranked 3rd Top Performing School in the country with 20 or more examinees and with at least 80% passing rate in the August 2023 Mechanical Engineer Licensure Examination. 


Richard Lituañas of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) in Cagayan de Oro topped the August 2023 Certified Plant Mechanics Licensure Examination. 


Jaime Lanto Umpa, Jr. from Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) obtained a rating of 86.50% to place 10th among 800 examinees who passed the September 2023 Registered Master Electrician (RME) Licensure Examination. 


Lourdes College in Cagayan de Oro City obtained a passing rate of 95.74% (45/47) to emerge as 6th Top Performing School in the country in the September 2023 Licensure Examination for Social Workers.


Akira T Timtim (Top 4), Yule Justin M Paculba (Top 5) and Chier Andriane A Quelbio (Top 6) – all graduates of Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) were among the topnotchers in the October 2023 Metallurgical Engineers Licensure Examination. 


Clarissa Therese M Mordeno, the first ever magna cum laude graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine of Central Mindanao University (CMU) has placed 2nd in the October 2023 Veterinarians Licensure Examinations.


ARJAY E. NAMBATAC of Xavier University (XU) placed 7th among 651 examinees who passed the October 2023 Chemical Engineers Licensure Examination administered by the Professional Regulation Commission. XU also placed seventh with a passing percentage of 81.48 among top-performing schools (with 10 or more examinees passed and at least 80% overall passing percentage category).


Joyce Capito Gomez of Central Mindanao University (CMU) in Maramag, Bukidnon obtained a score of 90.85 percent to place third among 1,076 examinees who passed the October 2023 Foresters Licensure Examination.


EIDENWIN VELASCO CANOY of Central Mindanao University (CMU) in Maramag, Bukidnon placed 10th among 3,423 out of 10,014 who passed the November 2023 Agriculturists Licensure Examination.


LERAH DONOR DALID of Misamis University (MU) in Ozamiz City placed 3rd in the November 2023 Licensure Examination for Midwives. Meanwhile, Tagoloan Community College had a passing rate of 90.48% to rank 6th among Top Performing Schools with 35 or more examinees and with at least 80% passing rate.


CHRISTINE JOAN B DIAO, a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Adventist Medical Center College (AMCC) in Iligan City placed 7th in the November 2023 Nutritionist-Dieticians Licensure Examination. Meanwhile, Central Mindanao University (CMU) in Maramag, Bukidnon emerged as Number 1 Top Performing School with a 100 percent passing rate.


Fide Lynn Corpus Ragpala and Venisse Abecia Olarita, both of Xavier University (XU), placed 8th and 9th, respectively, in the November 2023 Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination. XU also made it as the No. 1 Top Performing School along with several others with a 100 percent passing rate (155/155).


A Kagay-anon has topped the October 2023 Physicians Licensure Examination! Justin Riley Yap Lam, a graduate of Cebu Institute of Medicine, topped the said board exam with a rating of 89.00 percent. Lam’s family owns the famed Shanghai Bakery in Cagayan de Oro City.


Did you know that Hiyasmin Agbu Caputol of Xavier University (XU) who placed 9th in the September 2023 Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers – Elementary Level was a former beauty queen? She was crowned Miss Balingoan in 2018.


Nine graduates from schools in Northern Mindanao were among the topnotchers in the September 2023 Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers – Elementary Level. They include three (3) from Phinma-Cagayan de Oro College, two from IBA College of Mindanao, and one each from Bukidnon State University, Xavier University, Liceo de Cagayan University and Saint Peter College in Balingasag, Misamis Oriental.


ELIJAH PAUL L. LUNA placed 9th in the December 2023 Chemists Licensure Examination. Hailing from Macasandig, Cagayan de Oro City, Luna is a cum laude graduate of Ateneo de Manila University.


Arjay E Nambatac of Xavier University just became a two-time board topnotcher after placing 3rd in the December 2023 Chemical Technicians Licensure Examination with results released today. Nambatac previously placed 7th in the October 2023 Chemical Engineer Board Exam.


RYAN KENTH SALE VALLENTE and CHESIA EARL ALIVIO BASINILLO, both of Bukidnon State University (BSU), placed 6th and 7th, respectively, in the May 2023 Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination.


MIRASOL OBASA HINAUTAN of Capitol University in Cagayan de Oro City placed 9th among 1,917 out of 2,857 who passed the April 2023 Philippine Nurses Special Professional Licensure Examination held in: Abu Dhabi and Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Al Ahmadi, Kuwait; Al-Khobar, Jeddah and Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; Doha, Qatar; Manama, Bahrain and Singapore.


Richard Calderon Biescas of Central Mindanao University (CMU) just became a topnotcher in two board exams after placing 2nd in the Chemists Licensure Examination and 4th in the Chemical Technicians Licensure Examination, both held in December 2023.


Xavier University (XU) obtained a 71.79% passing rate in the 2023 Bar exams, making it as the 2nd top performing law school with 51- 100 Bar takers.


Xavier University Ateneo de Cagayan finished as Top 2 Performing School (with 51-100 candidates) for First-Time Candidates and Top 4 for All Candidates in the November 2022 Bar Exams based in results released today by the Supreme Court.
