The proposed Cagayan de Oro Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System is now in pre-project preparation stage. This was finally confirmed after the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) released the list of 194 Infrastructure Flagship Projects (IFP) under the administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.
As shown below, the Cagayan de Oro BRT System Project will be implemented by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) under the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) Program.
It can be recalled that during the previous administration, the City Government of Cagayan de Oro requested for assistance on funding source for the Cagayan de Oro BRT System but the DOTr denied the request due to lack of funds.
The BRT is a high-quality bus-based transit system that delivers fast, comfortable, and cost-effective services at metro-level capacities. It does this through the provision of dedicated lanes, with busways and iconic stations typically aligned to the center of the road, off-board fare collection, and fast and frequent operations.
Because BRT contains features similar to a light rail or metro system, it is much more reliable, convenient, and faster than regular bus services. With the right features, BRT is able to avoid the causes of delay that typically slow regular bus services, like being stuck in traffic and queuing to pay on board.
Just a couple of weeks ago, the first BRT System in the country broke ground in Cebu.
