US Army team conducts Strategic Port Visit at Cagayan de Oro Port

A team from the US Army’s 545th Harbor Master Detachment, 8th Special Troops Battalion, stationed at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, visited the Port Management Office of Misamis Oriental/Cagayan de Oro (PMO MOC) on August 20, 2024. The visit was part of their tour of regional seaports to assess their suitability for conducting cargo operations in support of Balikatan and other future joint military exercises. This strategic evaluation is essential for optimizing logistical support and operational planning for these high-profile exercises.

Led by Commander Jose A. Gomez, his team of four were welcomed by key personnel of PMO MOC led by PM Isidro V. Butaslac, Jr., PSD Manager Ruby O. Gumapon, ESD Acting Division Manager Antonio Torcino, Jr., TS Jonathan Saliring, Harbor Master Kirk Lumayag, Oroport General Manager Arnold M. Alonzo, and Acting PPD Manager Zaldy E. Magtagad.

The briefing featured an audio-visual presentation detailing the port’s profile, followed by a video presentation of a recent simulation exercise. These presentations provided the US Army team with valuable insights into the port’s operational capabilities and logistics infrastructure.

An open forum followed, where both parties discussed coordination protocols for future port visits. This interactive session allowed for a comprehensive dialogue on logistical considerations and ensured alignment on operational procedures.

The visit concluded with a running tour around the port, offering the US Army team a firsthand look at the facilities and operational workflow. This practical tour further enhanced their understanding of the port’s capabilities and its readiness for supporting future cargo operations.
