The P100 million Feasibility Study (FS) of the Mindanao Railway Project Phase 3 (Northern Mindanao Railway) is expected to start upon contract signing which is already set next month (October). This was confirmed by DOTr Undersecretary Cesar Chavez during the hearing for the department’s FY 2024 budget in the Committee on Appropriations upon interpolation by Cong. Rufus Rodriguez. Meanwhile, funding for the FS of the Cagayan de Oro Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project is included in DOTr’s budget for 2024.

Mindanao Railway Project Phase 3 is a 54.8-kilometer segment of the Mindanao Railway System spanning across the highly urbanized city of Cagayan de Oro, connecting the Municipalities of Laguindingan and Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. The FS will determine the alignment of the railways, the number of stations, and services; and through a Public-Private Partnership, the proposed railway can be expected to have high levels of service, particularly in terms of comfort and reliability.

During the budget hearing, the following railway stations were identified:

  • Laguindingan
  • Alubijid
  • El Salvador
  • Opol
  • Cagayan de Oro Grand Central
  • Cagayan de Oro East
  • Tagoloan
  • Villanueva

Meanwhile, provision for the Feasibility Study of the proposed Cagayan de Oro Elevated Light Rail Transit System has been assured by DOTr Usec Timothy Batan. As initially proposed, the project covers two phases: Phase 1 – Bugo to Bulua passing thru the Butuan-Cagayan-Iligan Road; Phase 2 – Paseo del Rio Rotunda in Nazareth to Macabalan Pier passing thru A. Velez St, J. Pacana St, and Puntod.
