Following the “Build Better More” directive of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., the Public-Private Partnership Center Project Development and Monitoring Facility (PDMF) Committee has approved the P100-million funding for the conduct of the feasibility study of the Northern Mindanao Railway Project which will initially serve the metropolitan area of Cagayan de Oro up to Laguindingan Airport. It may eventually connect with the rest of the Mindanao Railway System.

This was disclosed by Department of Transportation (DOTr) Assistant Secretary for Planning and Project Development Leonel De Velez, the project is also in line with the recently approved Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028 that prioritized the mass transit systems throughout the country.

The proposed Mindanao Railway Project Phase 3 (Northern Mindanao) is a 54.8-kilometer segment of the Mindanao Railway System spanning across the highly urbanized city of Cagayan de Oro, connecting the Municipalities of Laguindingan and Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.

Accordingly, through the PDMF, the feasibility study will determine the alignment of the railways, the number of stations, and services; and through a Public-Private Partnership, the proposed railway can be expected to have high levels of service, particularly in terms of comfort and reliability.
