RANDOM SHOTS: Rare rafflesia flower discovered in Malitbog, Bukidnon

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region X has confirmed the presence of the rare Rafflesia schadenbergiana in the forests of Malitbog, Bukidnon—the first recorded population in the area. Known as one of the world’s largest flowers, the species was found with four blooms, including one measuring 63 centimetres across, four decomposed flowers and nine healthy buds. First reported by members of the Higaonon community in 2025, the discovery highlights the important role of Indigenous Peoples in protecting biodiversity. DENR is now working with the local community and the Malitbog local government to conserve the site and is pushing to declare the area a Critical Habitat while keeping its exact location confidential to prevent disturbance and illegal collection.
