Malaybalay City native Gerald Tabios will return to California this July as the only Filipino competing in the 2026 Badwater 135 Ultramarathon, widely regarded as one of the world’s toughest foot races. The 56-year-old Tabios will make his 10th start in the grueling 217-kilometer race across Death Valley, with a successful finish placing him among the select runners to complete the event 10 or more times. A civil engineer who moved to New York in 2001, Tabios began running by commuting 10 kilometers to work each day before building an impressive ultrarunning career. He has since completed more than 220 marathons and ultramarathons, including 20 consecutive New York City Marathons, five Boston Marathons, and 13 finishes at The Great New York 100 Mile Race.
