An injured adult female Philippine Eagle was rescued near the Sawaga River in Barangay Dalwangan, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, on July 3, 2026, after being found critically weak, dehydrated, with maggot-infested wounds, and severely damaged feathers. Later named Sawaga-Dalwangan, the eagle was turned over by local residents to authorities with the assistance of Indigenous community members and volunteers before being transferred to Davao City for specialized veterinary care. Subsequent X-ray examinations revealed two airgun pellets lodged in her body, indicating that she had likely been shot, resulting in the injuries she sustained.
The discovery of the airgun pellets has prompted authorities to investigate whether wildlife protection laws were violated. Under Republic Act No. 9147, or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act, it is illegal to kill, injure, possess, or mistreat protected wildlife without authorization.
