55-year-old mother joins city scholarship applicants, pursues college dream

It is never too late to pursue education. A 55-year-old mother of two is among nearly 5,000 applicants for Cagayan de Oro City’s scholarship program. Nanay Alfreda Ubanan, an ALS graduate, took the qualifying exam last April 21 with assistance from the City Education and Development Office (CEDO) after encountering challenges in the application process. She now hopes to pursue a Bachelor of Elementary Education at PHINMA-Cagayan de Oro College and earn the scholarship to better support her family.

The scholarship application process was administered by the Center for Educational Measurement (CEM), Inc. of Manila, marking its sixth consecutive year of partnership with the city government to ensure a standardized and impartial selection process. Passing the qualifying examination remains one of the key requirements for acceptance to the city’s scholarship program.

Currently, Cagayan de Oro City Hall maintains a network of partner schools, including:

  • Liceo de Cagayan University
  • Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan
  • University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP)
