“Living in a remote Alaskan village presents many challenges, especially for teachers unfamiliar with the unique demands of village life. For those moving to Kalskag, this transition can feel overwhelming—but thanks to Dale’s unwavering kindness and dedication, that process has become far smoother and more welcoming. Having experienced the challenges firsthand when he moved to Kalskag in 2020, Dale made it his mission to support incoming educators—not only
helping them adjust, but ensuring they truly feel at home.

More than just a special education teacher, Dale has become a cornerstone of the community. He consistently goes above and beyond, offering advice, answering questions, and sharing invaluable tips on living and teaching in rural Alaska. His initiative, “Help from the North,” exemplifies his generous spirit, reaching beyond Kalskag to support students and families in other communities as well. By fostering a more stable and supportive environment for teachers and families alike, Dale has directly contributed to the success and well-being of our students.

Educators like Dale are shaping the future of Alaska by creating nurturing spaces where both students and teachers can thrive. It is with deep gratitude and admiration that we honor Dale with The First Lady Volunteer Award.

The Alaska First Lady Volunteer of the Year Award is an annual recognition program that honors individuals across the state of Alaska for their exceptional volunteer service and contributions to their communities. Initiated in 1974 by then-First Lady Bella Hammond, the award honors Alaskans who go above and beyond to serve others and inspire a spirit of giving. The award not only celebrates individual acts of service but also aims to inspire a broader culture of volunteerism across the state.

By the way, last year, Dale also received the 2024 Special Education Inclusive Practices Individual of the Year Award. Read our post below.
