The caretaker who helped rescue a person from the jaws of “Lalay” the crocodile in Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay demonstrated how the reptile typically stalks and approaches its prey—only a long stick to disturb the water’s surface, he showed how minimal movement is enough to trigger the crocodile’s predatory instincts. He also demonstrated how “Lalay” released the victim during the rescue. By striking the water twice with a long stick, the crocodile let go of the man and shifted its focus toward him instead. According to the caretaker, he had trained “Lalay” to respond to the stick since it was young.
