HISTORY WATCH: Camp Phillips – named after Del Monte harvest superintendent who joined the guerilla movement during WW II

Did you know that Camp Phillips in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon, the headquarters of Del Monte Phils. Inc.’s Plantation Operations, is named after one of its harvest superintendents? During World War II, when the Japanese discovered the plantation’s airstrips, most Del Monte expatriates and their families were rounded up as prisoners of war. However, one harvest superintendent, Marc Phillips joined the guerilla movement instead and was tasked with monitoring enemy vessels in Northern Mindanao. The plantation’s main camp and hospital were later named in honor of his heroism.
