The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) has issued an advisory clarifying that the phenomenon witnessed by residents in Northern Mindanao and Eastern Visayas around 1:30 AM on December 4, 2024, is UNLIKELY to be a meteor shower or of astronomical origin. It also cannot be linked to rocket launch debris. Instead, PhilSA stated that the objects’ appearance resembles past space debris reentry events, such as falling defunct rocket stages or satellites. Videos and photos of the incident have since circulated on social media.

PhilSA stated it is actively monitoring the situation to gather more accurate information. The Agency also advises the public to immediately inform local authorities if any of the debris is sighted. PhilSA further cautions against retrieving or coming in close contact with these materials, as these may pose potential health and safety risks.
