Three treasure hunters tragically died after apparently suffocating in an underground mining hole in Purok 8, Sitio Sugong Bagaay, Barangay Baliwagan, Balingasag, Misamis Oriental, this morning, July 1, 2024. Personnel from the Balingasag Fire Station and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) attempted to revive the victims after retrieving them from the hole, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Police have identified the victims as Alberto Saratao Sr. 48 yrs old, Jeffrey Mingo, 30 yrs old and a 16-year old minor, all residents in the area. One 12-year old survived and reported the incident to authorities. He was transported to the Misamis Oriental Provincial Hospital for urgent medical care.
