There is both good news and bad news for Uptown Cagayan de Oro. The good news is that Masterson Avenue will be widened to address the increase in vehicular traffic. The bad news is that 97 trees will have to be cut down. A billboard has been posted on-site regarding the project, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through CENRO Initao, has already issued a tree cutting permit last May 9, 2024.

Here is the billboard posted near Camella Subdivision entrance. The trees behind it will be among those affected.

Based on the project description, the road widening will start at K1443 + 483 (SM City CDO Uptown near ATM machines) and end at K1458 +587 (near Mambuaya Brgy Hall) or around 15 kilometers. Along this alignment, some 97 trees will have to be removed.

Several trees have already been marked.

Other trees have already had their branches trimmed, leaving only the trunk remaining.

This section near Masterson Mile has been utilized for parking.

Sadly, when these trees are cut, the natural shade provided by these trees will be gone.

Masterson Avenue currently has four lanes, but the rapidly increasing population in the city’s uptown area, driven by new residential communities, causes heavy traffic during rush hour. The full width of the road’s right-of-way is evident from the position and location of the electric and telco poles seen on the right in the photo below.

We don’t know if these palm trees will be included.

Just plant a new tree behind it. No problem.

And y’all ask why it’s so freaking HOT?! This city is becoming more car-centric. We should address this tree cutting and deforestation seriously because there’s an actual benefit of having trees around, especially on our busy roads. There should be some urban planners here in CDO who focus on pedestrian safety and environmentally friendly projects. Road widening will never be the answer. I bet that after a few months, Masterson will still experience heavy traffic because it’s a never-ending cycle, unless a new public transport system is implemented. There have been cases and research, especially in the States, where massive highways were being removed and replaced for pedestrians. How long will the local government realize this? I don’t know, but everyone just seems to not care.
