9 Kagay-anon educators remain in America’s Favorite Teacher Competition 2024

After a series of elimination rounds, at least nine US-based Kagay-anon educators still have the chance to become America’s Favorite Teacher. Six of them – Marlon Francis Serina, Estormeo Gomez Serena, Ian Kirk Elmido, Chester John Pasco, Arwin Frank Alunan and Jesseca Lindsey are currently ranked No. 1 in their respective groups as of posting time and have a good chance to become Group Finalists. Only the top vote-getter in each group will advance to the quarterfinals. Let us help them advance by voting for them. Voting for Group Finalists ends on Thursday, May 2 at 7PM PDT.


Marlon Francis Serina is a graduate of Bachelor in Secondary Education of Xavier University. He started teaching at Liceo de Cagayan University for 3 years before joining DepED in 1996 where he taught at Cagayan de Oro National High School, Carmen NHS, East Gusa NHS, Lumbia NHS and Gusa Regional Science HS. He was also a part time math instructor at University of Science and Technology of Southern Phils (USTP), Opol Community College and Tagoloan Community College. He retired as Secondary School Principal lll.

Estormeo Gomez Serena became a Research Fellow for 2 years of Arizona State University-Arizona Science Accelerated Project, Arizona State Level essay writing winning coach for two years and is currently a teacher at Quartzsite School District in Arizona. Vote for him in the link below.

Born and raised in Cagayan de Oro, Ian Kirk Elmido has been a Special Education teacher for 7 years at Cienega High School, an A+ school in Vail, Arizona. In 2024, he won a Fiesta Bowl Wishes for Teachers grant, receiving $2500 for his students. Additionally, he has led the Special Olympics for students with disabilities at his school. Finally, John Paul Endab is currently in his 3rd year as Teacher Exchange Program Participant in Illinois, USA teaching Physical Education (PE) from Pre-K to 12th at Joppa-Maple Grove Unit School District #38 in Joppa, Illinois. The competition drew over 70,000 teachers from all over United States. All competitors were initially grouped into 108 teachers each group. Each public voting rounds reduces the competitors per group as shown in the competition schedule below.

  • Top 20 (March 25 – April 4) – public voting will help reduce each group to the top twenty (20) competitors
  • Top 15 (April 4 – April 11) – public voting will help reduce each group to the top fifteen (15) competitors
  • Top 10 (April 11 – April 18) – public voting will help reduce each group to the top ten (10) competitors
  • Top 5 (April 18 – April 25) – public voting will help reduce each group to the top five (5) competitors
  • Group Finals (April 25 – May 2) – public voting will help reduce total competitors to one (1) preliminary winner in each group who will then advance to the quarterfinals
  • Wildcard Round (May 3 – May 5) – competitors who placed 2nd in their respective Group Finals will compete in a shortened round for a chance to advance to the Quarterfinals. Votes will be reset and public voting will determine the top one (1) competitor from each group who will then advance to the Quarterfinals
  • Quarterfinals (May 6 – May 16) – the top competitors from each Group Finals/Wildcard Round group will be divided into Quarterfinals groups. Votes will be reset and public voting will determine the top one (1) Quarterfinalist from each group who will then advance to the Semifinals
  • Semifinals (May 17 – May 23) – the top competitors from each Quarterfinals group will be divided into Semifinals groups. Votes will be reset and public voting will determine the top one (1) Semifinalist from each group who will then advance to the Finals
  • Finals (May 24 – May 30) – votes will be reset and public voting will determine which one Finalist will be the winner of the 2024 America’s Favorite Teacher Competition. The Grand Prize Winner will be announced on or around June 7, 2024.

The winner will receive $25,000, a trip to Hawaii and a feature in Reader’s Digest.
