Cagayan de Oro will be hosting a milestone event with the 5th Philippine Silk Summit at the Cove Garden Resort in Cugman on February 29, marking the first time the event will take place outside Metro Manila. Organized by the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), The Summit seeks to build up the current and potential partners of the Philippine Silk to strengthen cooperation towards the realization of sustainable and sufficient Philippine Silk.

With the theme ‘Spinning Innovations for Philippine Silk,’ this year’s summit seeks to facilitate collaboration and unite stakeholders around a shared vision for realizing the potential of Philippine silk.
Here are the activities for the Summit:
- Launching of the Silk Innovation Hub in Misamis Oriental
Misamis Oriental receives the first Silk Innovation Hub in Mindanao with the capability and machinery to process silk from cocoons, raw silk, to thrown silk yarn. The hub strengthens the positioning of the Philippine Silk sector with a focal site of all DOST-PTRI’s R&D, innovation, technology generation, and production of Philippine Silk.

- SEDA Pilipinas Exhibition
The Exhibition will showcase the skills of local weavers who play a vital role in the silk value chain. From traditional weaving to contemporary fashion pieces, this exhibition celebrates the versatility of silk while highlighting its cultural and economic significance in the region. Visitors will also gain insights into the value chain of silk production, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices.
- Ceremonial MOA and MOU Exchange
The ceremonial exchange of Memoranda of Agreement (MOA) and Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) between DOST-PTRI and various public and private organizations. These partnerships are instrumental in advancing the Philippine silk industry by leveraging individual expertise, capabilities, and resources to promote innovation and sustainability.

- Philippine Stakeholders’ Forum
The conference features a separate session, particularly for the current and potential stakeholders of Philippine Silk. SEDA Pilipinas roadmap, its accomplishments, the regional capabilities, and technology gaps will be presented to inform the stakeholders of the current status of the Philippine silk industry. Industry partners and collaborators from both the government and private sectors will share their respective participation, contributions, and commitments to the full development of the Philippine Silk Roadmap.
- Silk Stakehodlers’ Night
This gathering seeks to facilitate the rekindling of connections, spark conversations, sharing of best practices, and expansion of networking opportunities in the development of Philippine silk.. Expected attendees include seri-farmers, handloom weavers, designers, and representatives from the academe and local government offices.

- Field Visit to Key Partners’ Sites
The post-summit activity provides a unique opportunity to visit DOST-PTRI’s focal site of the Philippine Silk innovation, development, and production. The visit to these key partner sites hopes to facilitate a deeper understanding of the processes, appreciation of best practices, and the challenges and opportunities in the industry.
