CDO solon files bill allowing ‘heartbreak leave’ for workers after a breakup

On Valentine’s Day, Cagayan de Oro City 1st District Rep. Lordan G Suan filed a bill which grants “heartbreak leave” as emotional support to workers coping up with a breakup. Under House Bill 9931 or “AN ACT GRANTING HEARTBREAK LEAVE AND PROVIDING EMOTIONAL SUPPORT RESOURCES FOR RECOVERING EMPLOYEES“, an employee aged below 25 years old can avail one day unpaid heartbreak leave every year while those aged 25 to 35 years old can avail two days unpaid heartbreak leave annually.

In his explanatory note, Rep. Suan stated that “studies reveal the substantial toll breakups take on individuals, affecting their emotional and mental well-being, leading to decreased productivity, absenteeism, and legitimacy of emotional distress stemming from personal life and offers crucial support during this challenging time.”
