The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has cancelled its plan to demolish and replace the iconic Ysalina Bridge in Cagayan de Oro City. This after discussions with heritage advocates. Instead, they will only conduct a major repair, particularly on the bridge’s corroded carriageway. DPWH is also considering the proposal to build a sidewalk and bicycle lanes.

Meanwhile, the DPWH is currently awaiting an update from the central office in Manila regarding the name indicated in the project’s budget, which is necessary before the agency can proceed with implementation. The DPWH originally proposed a budget of P165 million for the project, but it needs to be revised from “replacement” to “major repair” before further action can be taken. See link below.

The DPWH also clarified that their records still identify the structure as Carmen Bridge. However, it was officially renamed to Gov. Pacienco Ysalina Bridge through the approval of City Ordinance No. 7301-2000 in honor of the former governor of Misamis Oriental who played a crucial role in the construction of the bridge back in 1947.
