Police investigators have identified the person-of-interest in the deadly bombing at state-run Mindanao State University (MSU) Main Campus in Marawi City on Sunday, December 3, 2023. Authorities released the photo of Arsani Membisa or Wahab A Macabayao. As per initial assessment, the incident is possibly in retaliation to recent military operations in Lanao del Sur and Basilan wherein Dawlah Islamiyah (DI) – Maute and Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) suspects were neutralized. As per initial assessment, the explosion at the Dimaporo Gymnasium inside MSU Marawi is possibly a retaliation of DI-Maute Group to the recent military operation at Brgy Tambo, Piagapo, Lanao del Sur at around 1:00am on December 3, 2023 wherein a suspect identified as Alandoni “Alando” Macadaag Luksadatu was killed by elements of the 51st Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army.
Another operation conducted by Joint Task Force Orion in Brgy Lahi Lahi, Tuburan, Basilan last December 2, 2023 neutralized ASG/Sub Leader Mudzimar Sawajaan, a high value target.
Initial investigation also revealed the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device composed of one 60mm mortar and one MEUG RPG.
Meanwhile, civilian casualties have risen to 11 with at least 40 others injured. The victims were brought to Amai Pakpak Medical Center (APMC).
