PROJECT WATCH: Feasibility Study for Cagayan de Oro Mass Transit System (Elevated Railway) to start January 2024

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has allocated P24.9 million for the first phase of the feasibility study for the Cagayan de Oro Mass Transit System or Elevated Railway System. This was stated in a letter by DOTr Assistant Secretary Leonel Cray P de Velez to Cong. Rufus Rodriguez. This feasibility study is meant to complement the study for the Mindanao Railway Project Phase 3 (Laguindingan-Cagayan de Oro-Villanueva). Accordingly, procurement activities for consultancy services will be undertaken in October 2023 and study is expected to start in January 2024.

As initially proposed, the Light Rail or Elevated Railway will span the entire stretch of Cagayan de Oro from Brgy. Bugo to Brgy. Iponan and from Paseo Rotunda to Macalaban Port passing thru A. Velez St., to Pacana St., to Puntod, then Macabalan. This will also study the number of stations to be established, and the safety and reliability of the future railway system. The railway system project will improve the public transportation mechanism of the city providing convenience of commuters, as well as drivers by easing heavy traffic in the national highways.
