Joseph O. Arao-arao from Cagayan de Oro City has won first place in the representational painting category of the recent 18th annual National Art Competition by the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) with his “Uno’s Gentle Warmth” painting. As a grand prize winner, he received Php300,000 during the awarding of winners held last June 16 at the GSIS Gymnasium. His winning artwork is now part of the GSIS art collection and can be viewed at the GSIS Museo ng Sining in Pasay City until August 31, 2023.

Photo below shows the grand prize winners, honorable mentions, and finalists in the representational and abstract painting; and sculpture categories display their medals, certificates, and facsimile checks after the awarding on June 16 at the GSIS Gymnasium. They are joined by the judges, officers of the Art Association of the Philippines, and GSIS executives. The GSIS Art Competition is one of the longest-running and most prestigious art contests in the country today. On its 18th year, the tilt attracted 871 entries.

Meanwhile, the Cagayan de Oro City Council on Tourism led by Hon. Jay Roa Pascual is considering to recognize the feat of the winning artist based a proposed resolution by City Vice Mayor Jocelyn Rodriguez.
