HISTORY WATCH: May 12, 1945 – Liberation of Cagayan

On May 9, 1945, guerilla forces from the 109th and 120th Infantry Regiment started the liberation of Cagayan, Misamis Oriental by attacking Japanese positions in Iponan at 9:06am. Two hours later at 11:00am, they captured the Patag Airstrip (Camp Evangelista) forcing the Japanese to withdraw to Barangay Carmen.

On May 12, 1945, at 9:30am, three battalions under the 109th IR were able to occupy Julao-julao (Consolacion), a Japanese-made bridge along Burgos-Yacapin St and the damaged Cagayan Bridge (Ysalina Bridge). The 109th IR was able to establish a defensive perimeter outside of the town. After mopping up operations in nearby areas, Cagayan was declared free of enemy occupants.
