Pope Leo XIV has appointed the Most Reverend Alberto “Abet” S. Uy as the new Archbishop of Cebu, succeeding Archbishop Jose S. Palma who has retired. Archbishop Uy becomes the second alumnus of St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Cagayan de Oro City to be elevated to the position of archbishop, following the Most Reverend Jose Cabantan.

The announcement was officially released through the Vatican’s Daily Bulletin. A native of Ubay, Bohol, Bishop Abet earned his Philosophy degree from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Tagbilaran and completed his Theological studies at St. John Mary Vianney Theological Seminary in Cagayan de Oro City. He later obtained a Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Before his new appointment, he served as the Bishop of Tagbilaran in Bohol.
