An endangered long-tailed macaque was rescued in Poblacion, Claveria, Misamis Oriental, and has been turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for safekeeping. The primate, reportedly kept as a pet by a local resident, was found by a concerned citizen and turned over to the Claveria Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO). Upon inspection, the macaque appeared to be in good health and was identified as a protected species under Republic Act No. 9147, or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. The DENR Regional Wildlife Center has since taken custody of the animal and will conduct further evaluation to determine its readiness for release back into the wild.
