Rescued Risso’s Dolphin in Camiguin shows signs of recovery

“Mahi,” a Risso’s dolphin accidentally caught in a fishing net in Catuhogan, Mahinog, Camiguin, is now showing signs of recovery. Initially found weak with visible wounds near its blowhole and mouth, Mahi has been under the care of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) at its Multi-Species Hatchery in Manuyog, Sagay, Camiguin. After 40 days of medical care and monitoring by BFAR, in collaboration with the Philippine Marine Mammal Stranding Network (PMMSN), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and local government units, Mahi is set to be transferred to a coastal cage for further rehabilitation before its release back into the sea.

This rescue effort reinforces BFAR-10’s role as the lead agency in aquatic wildlife protection, under Republic Act No. 9147 (Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act) and RA 8550 (Philippine Fisheries Code), as amended by RA 10654 and is a testament to what collective action can achieve in marine conservation.
