Aside from the popular pilgrimage sites of Malasag and Guadalupe, a third destination has emerged in Cagayan de Oro for those observing Holy Week through trekking as a form of penitence. The Shrine of Sta. Cruz in Bulao, Iponan, was inaugurated just last year. Unlike Malasag and Guadalupe, which are shaded by trees, the path to the large cross atop the hill in Bulao offers little protection from the summer heat. If you plan to visit, be sure to bring umbrellas, hats, portable fans, and plenty of water. Stay safe and hydrated.
The site was once a popular biking and trekking trail, where locals gradually began doing penitential walks to the hilltop—until it was finally developed into a formal pilgrimage site last year.

GETTING THERE. The landmark is Bulao Elementary School in Iponan. The route is just across the school.
