RANDOM SHOTS: Calabera Cave in Cagayan de Oro set for eco-tourism development

Calabera Cave, located in Camaman-an, Cagayan de Oro City, is being prepared for eco-tourism development. According to a 1992 report by Dr. Angel Bautista, a Senior Museum Researcher at the National Museum, the natural cave is believed to be one of the burial sites of ancient settlers in the city. During their archaeological exploration, rock shelter, human and animal bones or “kalabera” were collected from the site, thus the name. These skeletons are now on display at Museo de Oro, Xavier University. National Museum experts are convinced that the cave shelter was one of the areas used by early Kagayanons from the late Neolithic Age to the Iron Age.

The trail towards the entrance portal of the Calabera Cave is approximately a kilometer river trek from the jump-off point. According to the DENR team that conducted the inspection into the cave, entry inside requires technical skill as they had to climb approximately 10 meters up from the river. It is not a through cave and has 1 portal and has an approximate length of 8 meters.

Cong. Rufus Rodriguez had earlier filed a bill seeking to declare Calabera Cave as an ecotourism site.

Barangay officials of Camaman-an, led by Punong Barangay Carl Harrison D. Galarrita in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), recently conducted a site inspection of the cave. Browse over photos below by LGU Barangay Camaman-an.
