A male passenger drowned after jumping off a RoRo vessel last Sunday, February 23, near Lipata Port in Surigao City. Despite the rescue by Terminal Management Office personnel, the Philippine Coast Guard, and a local fisherman, the victim, identified as 51-year old Martino Havana Cortez Jr., from Lubang, Occidental Mindoro, could not be saved. Reports revealed the victim boarded LCT Georgia 1 at San Ricardo Port in Southern Leyte and jumped overboard around 12:30 pm, as the vessel was in the vicinity of Punta Bilar, close to the port.
