HISTORY WATCH: Preservation of historic “horno” in Alubijid, MisOr completed

The historical Horno (Kiln) in Alubijid, Misamis Oriental, the last remaining kiln built in the province during the Spanish period, now features a marker and concrete protective barrier. This old kiln was once used to make bricks for the construction of bridges in Alubijid, Tagoloan and Jasaan. The restoration and preservation efforts were personally funded by Cong. Rufus Rodriguez and were officially turned over on January 28, 2025.

Former Congressman Maxie Rodriguez represented Rep. Rufus during the turnover ceremony and was joined by Alubijid Municipal Mayor Emmanuel L. Jamis, Barangay Captain Orsun U. Garcia, and Atty. Cromwell Generalao, who shared insights into the history of Alubijid and the kiln.

Here’s the marker which reads “Hinggil sa Natatangi nitong Kahalagahan sa Pamanang Pangkalinangan ng Sambayanang Pilipino, and Pook Arkeolohiko ng Hurnong Itinayo noong Panahong Espanyol sa Alubijid, Misamis Oriental ay ipinahahayag bilang Mahalagang Yamang Pangkalinangan” which translates to “Due to its Exceptional Significance to the Cultural Heritage of the Filipino People, the Archaeological Site of a Kiln Built During the Spanish Era in Alubijid, Misamis Oriental is Declared a National Cultural Treasure.”

Here’s the map showing the location of the old kiln which is just in the vicinity of the town proper, some 250 meters south of the National Highway.

The concrete barrier serves as protection, as the site is located along the road and is vulnerable to erosion.
