Five family members from Cagayan de Oro and two minors from Polomolok, South Cotabato died and one was injured when their white Suzuki Super Carry utility vehicle crashed into a tree in Barangay Cebuano, Tupi, South Cotabato, on Monday afternoon, December 23, 2024. Police reported that the brakes malfunctioned while descending from Magsangyaw Land of Praise, forcing the driver to use the hand brake. The vehicle swerved off the road, and struck a tree, ejecting several passengers into a creek 5-meter deep creek. All seven passengers, including two minors, were declared dead on arrival at the hospital, while the driver survived.
Six of the victims including the driver Joliver Maglente were residents of Greenville Subdivision, Bugo, Cagayan de Oro City, while the two (2) minors were from Polomolok, South Cotabato. Reports identified the fatalities as Annabelle Maglente, 52 yrs old, Joan Maglente, 28 yrs old, Joel Maglente, Duke Maglente, Ike Maglente and two minors.
