ELECTION WATCH: Comelec files disqualification case vs Kikang

Barangay Carmen chairperson Raineir Joaquin “Kikang” Velez Uy, a candidate for Congress in Cagayan de Oro City’s 1st District in next year’s elections, is facing a disqualification case filed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec). The case stems from allegations of fraudulent and anomalous voter registration activities in Barangay Carmen. In a 16-page petition, Comelec alleged that Uy “willfully and maliciously employed the fraudulent scheme of issuing barangay certifications even to non-residents of Barangay Carmen to influence and induce them to register as voters in the said barangay, to purposely give due advantage to his candidacy for the 2025 NLE and BPE.”

Accordingly, Uy issued over 8,000 barangay certifications as proof of residency for voter registration applications which resulted to an unusual surge of registered voters in Barangay Carmen from 39,359 in 2023 to 56,837 in 2024. Comelec alleged that Uy is mostly responsible for a 44.41 percent voter registration increase in Carmen due to his issuance of a barangay certification. Read more in the link below.
