The Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) will soon have its own marine research vessel, the “F/V Kalilintad” meaning ‘peace’ in Maranao. This vessel will join the National Academic Research Fleet (NARFleet), a fleet of five research vessels under an initiative led by the University of the Philippines-Marine Science Institute (UP-MSI) in collaboration with other state universities. The fleet is set to play a crucial role in advancing marine science research across various regions of the Philippines, supporting vital studies in marine biodiversity, conservation, and ecosystem health.
F/V Kalilintad will offer research opportunities on the following areas:
- Deep Sea Mineral Exploration
- Physical, Chemical, and Biological Oceanography
- Ocean and Renewable Energy Research
- Oil and Gas Exploration
- Maritime Education and Training

According to MSU-IIT Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise Prof. Ephrime B. Metilloly, the research boat will undergo necessary refurbishment and retrofitting and will be operational in either April or May of next year, each carrying around 20 scientists on their voyage.
Other vessels in the NARFleet include M/V Panata, M/B Patag, M/V Talingkas, and F/V Panayana. The vessels will be co-managed by the participating state universities and colleges (SUCs).
