Cagayan de Oro City will join other local governments and stakeholders in a mass bamboo planting activity that they hope will set a Guinness Book of World Records record for most bamboo planted in one hour.
During Monday’s flag raising program, City Administrator Roy Hilario Raagas said the mass bamboo planting activity scheduled this September was launched by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-10) together with Bukidnon officials and Cagayan de Oro City Hall. ‘Northern Mindanao including Cagayan de Oro City will join in this activity,’ Raagas said.

The bamboo planting activity coincides with the annual observance of Philippine Bamboo Month in September and World Bamboo Day on September 18. Raagas said the mass bamboo planting activity will be scheduled late in the month. ‘About 10 hectares in Sitio Pamalihi, Barangay Pagatpat will be set aside (for this activity),’ he said.

Spearheading the activity in the city will be the City Agricultural Productivity Office and the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO), Raagas said. Partnering with City Hall are some of the city’s barangays and cooperatives such as the Kolago Farmers Cooperative and the City Farmers Confederation among others, he said.

Raagas said a portion of the river boulevard will be set aside for the program. ‘More details of the activity will be disclosed in the coming weeks by the DOST-10, the City Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office and CLENRO. The team of validators from the Guinness Book of World Records will arrive (in the city) for the activity,’ Raagas said.
