A Philippine Serpent Eagle (Spilornis holospilus) was found weak and unable to fly in the forested area of Purok 1, Barangay Mialen in Oroquieta City at around 4:00pm last Sunday, January 28, 2024. Mr Rolly Bongcawil, a CAFGU personnel, found the bird and quickly informed authorities. Dr. Maynard Bongcayao of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) proceeded to the site the following day and then brought it to the Provincial Veterinary Office. The bird has since been turned over to the Community Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO) for appropriate care.

The Philippine Serpent Eagle is an endemic species to the Philippines and is classified under “least concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. However, its conservation status remains a concern due to the continuous threat of habitat loss.

Further, Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act prohibits the unauthorized possession of wildlife and mandates strict penalties for violators.
