Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Nashiba Daud and Electrophysiologist Douglas Bailon alongside Cardiac Anesthesiologist Dr. Raisalam Macataman and the entire Cathlab Team of CDO Polymedic Medical Plaza successfully performed the first ever Leadless Pacemaker Implantation in Northern Mindanao last August 26, 2023. The patient is a 67-year old male who had episodes of dizziness and a regularly irregular ECG who was diagnosed with “Sick Sinus Syndrome.”
Unlike the conventional pacemaker, a LEADLESS PACEMAKER is a very small device comparable to that of a large vitamin capsule, it is minimally invasive – no chest incision, and it will not be noticeable as there will be no scar nor skin bump.
A pacemaker is a device implanted to control irregular heart rhythm. If it senses that the heart has slowed down or missed a beat, it will send electrical impulses to tell your heart to contract to produce a beat and restore it to its normal rhythm.
The patient’s Coronary Angiogram also revealed a 1-vessel Coronary Artery Disease (left anterior descending) and so a Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty was performed but prior to its conduct, a temporary pacemaker was inserted. These, on top of a triad of concerns: gallstones possibly blocking the ducts, massive gastrointestinal bleeding, and acute kidney injury. All of which need to be addressed and get clearances from other medical specialties.
To manage the main reason of the patient’s admission, a permanent pacemaker was deemed to be a necessity and in this case, to maximize the management, a LEADLESS PACEMAKER.
The day after the operation, the patient was fit for discharge and doctors are praying for his full recovery.
