A total of 142 junior golfers saw action in the just concluded Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines (JGFP) Pueblo de Oro Junior Open held over the weekend (January 27-29, 2023) in Cagayan de Oro City. Among the notable winners were Ralph Rian Batican who finished with the tournament best 36-hole total of 135 in the boys’ 9-10 age group, Alethea Gaccion who won via four-hole playoff in the girls’ 15-18 division and Korean Youngdu Cho in the boys’ 15-18 after the age group leader was disqualified for signing the wrong scorecard.

Here’s the playoff between Gaccion and Kiara Montebon after both were tied after 36 holes. Gaccion won after sinking her birdie putt while Montebon missed hers.

Other winners were Clement Ordeneza (boy’s 13-14), Zero Plete (girls’ 13-14), Jacob Gomez (boys’ 11-12), Nicole Gan (girls’ 11-12), Brittany Tamayo (girls’ 9-10), Gunnar Lucas Velez (boys’ 7-8), Brianna Macasaet (girls’ 7-8), Lucas De Guzman (boys’ 6-and-under) and Stephanie Gan (girls’ 6-and-under).

The event was also made special with the appearance of Philippine golf legend Frankie Minoza who hit one of the ceremonial balls at the start of the tournament.

All top 3 finishers in each age category received the pineapple-inspired special trophy.
