Leading the Way in Green Innovation

SM Supermalls are lighting the path to a greener future—quite literally. At the forefront of this sustainability movement is SM CDO Downtown, now powered by an impressive 1,121 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, generating a peak capacity of 700 kilowatts (kW). This bold initiative reflects SM’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation in renewable energy. SM CDO Downtown proudly celebrates this solar energy milestone.

As the first SM mall to install solar panels on a metal roof and the second in Mindanao to harness solar energy, this pioneering project marks a significant leap in sustainable mall operations.

A total of 1,121 solar PV modules are installed on the mall’s metal roof to harness clean, renewable energy. The solar power system at SM CDO Downtown has a total capacity of 700.63 kWp DC / 600 kW AC. It helps reduce the mall’s overall electricity consumption by an average of 95,858.28 kWh per month—enough to operate all 16 escalators and 11 elevators throughout the entire day.

By integrating solar technology into its infrastructure, SM Supermalls are reducing their reliance on conventional power sources and cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions. These eco-friendly upgrades not only lower operational costs but also align with global climate goals—making every sunny day a win for both business and the environment. But the impact goes beyond cost savings.

Solar energy offers a stable and reliable power source amidst rising electricity demands and fluctuating energy prices. This ensures a smooth, uninterrupted shopping experience for customers visiting from across the region, even during periods of power instability.

The adoption of solar power is just one part of a broader mission. It contributes to SM Prime Holdings’ Net Zero 2040 goal, which aims to significantly reduce the company’s carbon footprint. SM Prime’s total rooftop solar capacity is currently at 69.7 megawatt-peak (MWp) and is expected to increase to 100 megawatt-peak (MWp) by the end of the year. SM Supermalls continue to roll out eco-conscious innovations that protect the planet and inspire communities.

By investing in renewable energy today, SM is building a brighter, cleaner tomorrow for future generations. Environmental sustainability is not just a trend—at SM Supermalls, it is a way of life.
