The Cagayan de Oro City Government is exploring the possibility of a Cable Car System Project to be funded by private investors. This aligns with the city’s Transportation Master Plan for the next 5-10 years. According to the concept, the cable car system will facilitate commuting between the city’s uptown and downtown areas. Each aerial gondola can accommodate 8-10 passengers, with the potential to transport 3,000 people per hour at any given time.

Raymundo Talimio, President of the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Inc. (Oro Chamber), has described the project as one of the city’s “most significant and appealing investments.” With a route that spans from CM Recto to Cogon, continues to the Rotunda, and extends to the SM Uptown area and Gaisano Uptown Mall, it has the potential to become a tourist attraction.

Engr. Elpie Paras meanwhile had a proposal to extend another line from Rotunda to Kauswagan (Liceo) area and another line from Kauswagan to CM Recto. The line could also be extended down south towards the new Gaisano Uptown Mall.

Talimio also mentioned that the cable car system can be constructed in just 2 years. Unlike traditional hard infrastructure such as flyovers, it offers a cost-effective and practical solution, as it only necessitates strategically positioned posts and cables. Moreover, it aligns well with the ongoing developments in the city’s uptown areas.
